Why I Wrote These Notes
These notes accompany your primary course materials and textbooks. They serve as a companion resource, offering my perspective on key concepts and providing additional context that complements more comprehensive treatments of the subject matter.
Think of these notes as my side of a conversation we are having about your future career. I share what I have learned from years of practice, offer stories that illustrate key points, and highlight areas that deserve particular attention as you develop your skills.
How to Use These Notes
Use these notes alongside your textbook and course materials. Read the relevant sections before class to prime your thinking. Review them afterward to reinforce what you learned. Return to them when working on assignments and preparing for certification exams.
I encourage you to write in the margins. Highlight passages that resonate with you. Add your own examples. The most effective learning happens when you actively engage with the material.
How These Notes Are Organized
The notes follow a logical progression that mirrors how Business Analysis work actually happens in organizations.
Part I: Foundations introduces you to Business Analysis as a discipline and establishes the fundamental concepts that underpin everything else you will learn.
Part II: Core Knowledge Areas covers the knowledge areas defined by the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge: strategy analysis, planning and monitoring, elicitation and collaboration, requirements lifecycle management, and requirements analysis and design definition.
Part III: Agile Practice explores how Business Analysis adapts to Agile environments, with particular emphasis on the Scrum framework that dominates modern software development.
Part IV: Applied Practice provides hands-on exercises, explores emerging topics like artificial intelligence and data analytics, examines how Business Analysis skills apply across different business disciplines, and concludes with a comprehensive capstone project.
Certification Preparation
The content in these notes supports preparation for several professional certifications:
- ECBA (Entry Certificate in Business Analysis) from IIBA
- CCBA (Certification of Capability in Business Analysis) from IIBA
- CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) from IIBA
Each chapter indicates which certification areas it supports.
A Final Word Before We Begin
Business Analysis is not just a career path. It is a way of thinking that will serve you regardless of where your professional journey takes you. The ability to understand problems deeply, communicate clearly, and bridge the gap between what people need and what solutions can provide makes you valuable in any role.
I am genuinely excited to share this material with you. Let us begin.
